So last night, as I was writing my journal entry, iTunes sent me a message that said that there was a new version of iTunes available. Did I want to download the new version? I had ignored this message a few times before, and even though my iTunes was working fine, I hit the accept button. I think it took about an hour, more or less to download. Our internet isn’t too fast, but I guess that it worked. Until this evening.
It was my turn to pick a movie for movie night. I wanted to watch Fight Club. Before I left for Boston I copied a bunch of movies to my computer. And I copied them in whatever the format is that allows me to watch them on my iPod. So after dinner I headed back to my room to get my computer to bring to work. We have a really nice projector and we show the movie in the big conference room. Well, I tried to play the movie (just to make sure it worked), and I got an error message that I didn’t have iTunes on my computer anymore! Please install iTunes.
So as I type this, I’m downloading it again. I did have a dozen or so movies that I also had in some other format, so we ended up watching Vantage Point. Pretty good movie. If you liked Pulp Fiction, Memento, or Premonition, you’d like this movie as well.
Besides movie night, the day was extremely hectic. I’m so glad that I’m only here for six months. I have some coworkers that have one year “contracts” here and I don’t know if I could handle that. The pace is so relentless, that it’s like a meat grinder. One of Sean’s office mates turned in his resignation yesterday. A two week notice was mighty generous, I thought. If it wasn’t for contractual obligations, I think that half of the people would leave within a month.
And it’s not really because we have not enough people, but we have the wrong people doing these jobs. It’s like the company was so desperate to get people, they hired anyone and just assumed that they could learn another job. Regardless of what their training is, or what their degree is in. I wouldn’t recommend this place for anyone. If it wasn’t for Chip and Spencer and Mike and Keith… I don’t know what I’d do.
I was working straight through the afternoon putting together some slides and crunching my numbers; and even thought I was super-busy, I was feeling pretty good about it. Then I ran into a brick wall. I was stumped three ways to Wednesday. The only person I could ask was Chip, and he’s away at that conference. Since I was stuck, I went with everyone else to eat. The place we went had fish or prime rib as the specials. The smell of the fish was stinking up the place. Ug! And of course I had the prime rib. And it was awful! It was try and tasteless. And they didn’t even have that horseradish sauce. I couldn’t believe it. I really couldn’t.
Shaun is leaving here in a few days. He’s flying to Kansas for a day and then going back to his home office in Atlanta. It happened very quickly for him, and he’s pretty surprised at how well it’s going. So Sean and I will have the apartment to ourselves. Hopefully for a while. Except for the occasional person getting locked out, it’s a good room and we all get along.

Michael - This sounds like the DAWM Air Quality Mgt. Section, only their philosophy is "Hire an engineer--they know everything and can do anything." Is it any wonder they don't know shit from shinola when it comes to actually getting work done???
